Halloween Hijinks Book Review

Halloween Hijinks is a children’s picture book about dogs who go trick or treating with their family. This book is written by Kristin Haynes, illustrated by Anna Thompson and published by Senyah Projects.

Who loves to go trick or treating on Halloween? Who loves dressing up? Who loves getting free treats? Hendrix and Rocket are two pups who love doing all that, especially Hendrix.

One Halloween Hendrix and rocket accompanied their family as they went rick or treating. Hendrix was finding it difficult to carry his treat bag, which was full of his favourite treat, so he decided to leave it in a safe place. After visiting some more houses, Hendrix noticed the bag was getting smaller and wondered where his treats had gone. His investigation led him to find out what happened to his favourite chocolates, and he also made a new friend, a curious, sneaky and friendly little bat.

This is a delightful story that teaches children about having fun, community, loyalty and how to have a little bit of mischief. Kristin Haynes has included her love of dogs, the Weimaraner to be exact, and the Tasmanian wildlife in this beautiful story.

Blue Bear & I love the illustrations, artfully created by Anna Thompson. The bright colours of the costumes stand out against the evening light on the page, perfectly capturing the spookiness of Halloween. Blue Bear told me his favourite page was the one when the bat is sitting on Hendrix’s head, he said it reminded him of how sneaky little creatures can be.

I found this book delightful and subtly spooky. This is an ideal book to read to children who love to dress up, love Halloween and love a little bit of sleuthing.
